Behind the Scenes of the Burrow Bedroom

Since we got our start in 2017, we’ve been known for a few different things. Originally, we made our name as the people that engineered a luxury couch that could fit in a box. We won some awards, sold thousands of sofas, and hired a crew of people to help the brand grow and improve. Then we started designing other products, like coffee tables and credenzas and even rugs. People started to call us a living room company.

But now, we’re designing bedroom furniture. Which you may have gathered from the title of this story. The design process started several years ago, though, so let’s take a few steps back.

How to make the bedroom better

Just like couches, there are hundreds, probably thousands, of bed frames and dressers to choose from. Every possible style at every price point, from the most basic and affordable to elaborate inventions that have as many electronics as a car, not to mention actual race car beds. To make an actual difference, we had to go back to our guiding design philosophy: how do we actually solve a problem in this category?

For beds, we identified a few things that were pretty universally frustrating to customers. First, the handful of frames that claimed simple assembly were usually wobbly. We solved that by blending Japanese-inspired joinery with secure hardware, for the best of both worlds: pieces that fit together like a puzzle, and a limited number of clever fasteners. We also noticed that most headboards were a cop-out: either a plush board wedged between the mattress and the wall, or something just clamped to the edge of the frame. So, we made sure our headboard was securely attached to the frame of the bed.

That sort of checklist process is pretty reflective of our approach to design. We take a very pragmatic approach here; at the end of the day, we are not trying to reinvent the wheel. We’re trying to find very targeted, iterative improvements that make an outsized difference on the product experience. Take our new mattresses, for example: both the Lyric and Lyric Hybrid share a unique perforated cover, made with cool-to-the-touch nylon, and built-in handles to make it easy to lift and position out of the box, and move to a future home. Together, these small touches add up to an experience you’ll absolutely notice and appreciate.

We applied the same philosophy to our Prospect Dressers and Nightstands. We sourced premium drawer glides that prevent loud slams and pinched fingers. We designed the walls to extend above the top surface, as an edge guard to keep small items from slipping off the edge — cat parents and careless adults alike, that one is for you. And the nightstand has an integrated cord organization slot for phone chargers and lamp cords.

Speaking of lamps, we also partnered with a few brands we really respect to round out the bedroom assortment: Tala for beautiful, sustainable lighting and Sijo for luxurious, breathable bedding. We think each of these organizations are leaders in their respective crafts, and we’re proud to offer them alongside our own designs.

The entire Burrow team, across every department, has worked tirelessly to launch an entirely new category, and we’re so excited to finally share these designs with the world. We have a whole lot more planned for the next year (and beyond), and we’re so appreciative of your support as we’ve grown from tiny “couch in a box” company to a new kind of furniture company, designed for modern life at home.
